The advantages of networking

Networking allows users of different computers to work together more effectively and more efficiently. This is achieved by connecting the computers together with networking cables or wirelessly. Once software is installed that enables the computers to talk a common language, the users can share files and peripherals i.e. a printer that may be installed on a single computer, can be used by anyone using a computer that is on the same network. Sharing resources such as a printer reduces cost i.e. 30 computers would require 30 printers, with a network they only require one printer.

Other resources that can be installed on a network include email, Internet access on a single line, fax services and shared databases. With these features, networks play a crucial role in the day to day work of many businesses today. There are two basic types of network:

Peer to peer

These networks connect computers that are considered as equal in status (peers). The user of each computer decides which resources (directories and printers) he or she wants to share, and may specify a password that is required to access them. A user on another computer can then access these resources. These networks are good for up to about 10 users, if there is more, the number of passwords that need to be remembered can be daunting! In addition there is the disadvantage that each user must be capable of sharing resources.

Client-Server

These networks are considerably more sophisticated and are used in most networking situations. The main advantage is that all resources are controlled centrally at the server, which has the resources that will be shared attached to it. With a single logon a user can access resources anywhere on the network. In addition, only one person (normally called the administrator) needs the expertise to share resources and keep things running. A significant additional advantage to keeping all your files on a single server is that backup is made significantly easier, as only the files on the server need to be backed up.
